Holidays road trip to Finland – Rostock and ferry to Helsinki

July 13th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Finally time for my summer holidays is here. Since noone of us is too keen of laying at beach, we have to move even during holidays. So we packed our mountain bikes in car, added tent and sleeping bags and off we are to Finland.

Sandy beaches in Warnemunde in North Germany

First stop after 1100km was Warnemunde, Germany. Since we were about 4 hours to early in Rostock, Germany, where boarded our ferry for Helsinki, we drove around the bay to Warnemunde. Nothing special, but nice windy and pretty cold sandy beaches of Warnemunde were still better then seating in car and waiting for boarding to start.

So we went around, took few photos, enjoyed late afternoon on Baltic beaches of North Germany, and then went back to ferry terminal in Rostock. Of course it would help if we would think at least a bit, and wouldn’t count boarding will start at 21:30. When you are waiting there at 21:30 and nothing happens you start to wonder, how come we just trusted what’s written on ticket, and we didn’t think earlier. Ship from Helsinki moors only at 22:00, so it’s kinda hard to start boarding when there’s no ship yet :)

Editing photos while waiting for boarding

So I used this time to caption photos, and to get rid of work I would otherwise have later back home. We finally boarded a bit over midnight and when we woke up this morning, we were in middle of Baltic sea already. Now we have a bit over 24 hours of time, before we moor in Helsinki, Finland. But weather is nice, so we are enjoying sun and seawind on sundeck of Tallink Superfast VIII ferry. Phone doesn’t work, but we have free Internet all over the ship, so we can move from sundeck straight to bar, get drunk and still finish this entry in blog.

Yeah life is hard :P

We went with Tallink (http://www.tallinksilja.com). For Rostock-Helsinki direction their timetable is pretty cool, because you board around midnight in Rostock and you can get some sleep while ferry is still in harbor (ferry leaves around 4:00am) and you are in Helsinki around 6am. For going back, timetable is on one side good, on the other not so much. It gives you almost all day in Helsinki since boarding is around 19:00, but it comes to Rostock at 22:00, which might not be so great if you plan to go back home from there.
It’s worth booking few months earlier, because you get 20% discount this way. Otherwise we paid around 900eur for car and cabin on round trip. Quite expensive, but on other side it would be about same, if we would go up through Denmark to Sweden and took ferry between Stockholm and Helsinki or Turku. So we decided to save another 2000km (about 1000km one way to Stockholm) of driving and went straight from Rostock.
And of course we enjoyed it :) I have never been disappointed with going to Finland, and this time it wasn’t different either :)
