Holidays road trip to Finland – Finland part 2

August 12th, 2008 · No Comments

Approximately 3000 kilometers and we finally closed to our destination, Finnish lapland. We got our first lunch with reindeer as main dish in Kuusamo-Rukka region.

Traditional Karelian meal in small old Karelian village Bomba near Nurmes, Finland.

Lunch with excellent reindeer stew in one of most famous Finnish ski centers, Rukka was just beginning of my encounters with reindeers.

Area of reindeer husbandry

After that we continued trip to most west northern part of Finland, Enonteki region on far north of Lapland, and I continued my daily encounters with reindeers with smoked reindeer, pork filled with reindeer, reindeer file with smoked salmon etc.. I doubt there exists dish with reindeer that I haven’t tried yet. So if you don’t get visit from Santa in this year’s Christmas, it might be because I have eaten all his transport helpers. So yes, you are free to blame me, but I can’t help if they taste so delicious :P

Reindeers on road

During all this time weather was far from perfect, and in Kilpisjarvi on top of the World, or at least Finland, we go +10c, with quite strong wind and everything from rain to sun changing in minutes intervals.

But at least wind made most annoying creatures of north, mosquitoes not trolls, go away… at least as long as you are on open space. That’s also reason, why so many reindeers come to roads. With about 4000km, we are lucky for now, so we meet hundreds of reindeers on roads, but never hit any. And I hope it will stay like this for rest of our trip.

And that’s my way of enjoying Finland :)
