Berries growing on rock near palsa mires. Mires with permafrost around village of Iitto, Lapland, Finland, are only permafrost palsa mires in Finland.
Palsa means a giant peat hummock which is in permafrost. Palsa mounds require dry and cold winters to develop, as well as a snow cover which is kept partly thin by wind. Palsas are smal peat hillocks, the cores of which stay frozen even through the heat of the summer. Only the thin peat layer at the surface is unfrozen. The oldest frost mounds in Finland are 3000 years old.
