Sport through the lens

Card readers are something noone of us really likes, but we still can’t live without them. After spending few years with Sandisk Extreme USB reader, it was time to get something faster. Only option was one of very few available Firewire800 readers.

With new Sandisk Extreme and Extreme Pro cards, and new Canon 1dmk4, which is suppose to come to my bag and hands sometimes by the end of next week, I will need something a bit faster to meet shorter and shorter deadlines.

So after quite some searching, I went for Sandisk Firewire800 reader. Bad thing is, it only supports CF cards and not CF and SD cards. I normally shoot on CF cards anyway, but during the years my shooting and later on ingest, edit and send workflow evolved so, that it requires also SD card (if there’s not enough time between end of race and medal ceremony), which is second card in 1d cameras (yeah they should go into two CF slot design). To make this possible I didn’t find any other solution, then follow advice from one of forums, and go with Jobo CF adapter. It’s slow, but it does solve problem so….

Anyway… to make this short, here are few results of my “tests”. They are nothing real, done with one time try only, so don’t take them as something absolute, and you should take them as they are.

I used my Macbook Pro laptop (with everything but fast 120GB 5400rpm Fujitsu hard drive), few cards (Sandisk Extreme III CF and SD, Sandisk Extreme) and Sandisk Extreme USB and Sandisk Firewire card readers. Test batch were 178 photos in total size of 766MB.
